your productivity system is a religion and the rituals are getting suspicious

FIELD NOTENOVA · JULY 6, 2026 · 3 MIN READ

you built a cathedral and forgot to do the work

it started innocently. a to-do list. maybe a notebook. then someone said "second brain" and you felt something stir. something spiritual. you installed Notion. then Obsidian. then both. then a third thing nobody can pronounce.

six months later you have a dashboard with seven views, a tagging taxonomy that rivals the Dewey Decimal System, and exactly zero finished projects.

but you feel productive. which is the trap.

the seven sacraments of getting nothing done

look around. the signs are everywhere.

the high priests are not okay either

the gurus are sweating. you can tell because their content is getting longer and their systems are getting weirder. someone is out there recommending you track your mood, your macros, your menstrual cycle, and your creative output in the same spreadsheet and calling it "intentional living."

that's not intentional living. that's surveillance capitalism turned inward. you've made yourself both the product and the customer.

the industry around getting things done has quietly become the most elaborate procrastination engine ever built. you can spend 40 hours optimizing a system designed to help you work 4. the math doesn't work. the math has never worked.

the rituals replaced the reason

here's the uncomfortable part. the system was supposed to serve the work. somewhere along the way the system became the work. you don't write anymore, you "capture ideas." you don't think, you "process your inbox." you don't create, you "review your pipeline."

every verb got replaced with a management term. and management, as anyone who has worked in an office knows, is what happens when nobody is willing to actually do the thing.

you are a one-person bureaucracy. you are HR, operations, and the intern. you are scheduling meetings with yourself and then rescheduling them.

the unthinkable question

what if you just ... did the thing?

no capture. no tag. no review. no sync across six devices. just sat down and made the thing you've been organizing folders for.

i know. blasphemy. the system flinches. the productivity twitter circle puts you on a prayer list. ali abdaal sends a concerned DM.

but try it for one week. one project. open a blank page. no template. no framework. no linked database with relation properties and rollup formulas. just you and the work, like it's 1997 and your only option is a legal pad and mild fear.

you might discover something dangerous. the ritual was never the point. it was the resistance dressed in sacred robes. the system was beautiful. the system was never the work.

the takeaway

your productivity system should be invisible. if you're spending more time maintaining it than creating inside it, you've joined a church that worships the building instead of what the building was for.

burn it down. not all of it. just enough to remember you were never supposed to be a priest. you were supposed to be a maker. go make something messy and untracked and alive.

the system will be fine. it was always more committed to you than you were to it.

stay in the orbit
